Why Vote No
- Question 3 hurts small businesses. Question 3 allows smoking to continue in casinos, but bans it in bars. That gives big casinos an unfair advantage at the expense of local small business bar-owners. Many small business owners already struggle to make a profit.
- People can “vote with their feet.” Question 3 seeks to solve a non-existent problem because customers can “vote with their feet” and go to a non-smoking bar if that is what they prefer. In a place where adults go, the decision to allow smoking should be left to the owner.
- Kansas City already has a smoking ban that works; Question 3 weakens it. The council-approved smoking ban scheduled to take effect on March 24 already solves the problem. Kansas City does not need a new smoking ban that prohibits smoking in age-restricted bars while exempting casinos and restoring smoking to the concourses of the Truman Sports Complex.
- Question 3 gives an unfair competitive advantage to big casinos. Market forces should determine where and under what conditions smoking is allowed. If business owners want to declare their premises smoke-free, they already have every right to do so. Arbitrary government regulation will only impose unfair economic burdens on businesses and give a big advantage to casinos.
